Tonearm Mounting Data Sheet for 10 Inch Records – Baerwald Geometry

This chart shows the appropriate Mounting Distance for your Tonearm, according to its Effective Length. The Mounting Distance is the horizontal distance between the spindle center of the platter and the pivot point of the tonearm. The Effective Length is the direct horizontal path from the tonearm’s pivot point to the stylus tip of the phono cartridge. Overhang Length is the difference between the Effective Length and the Mounting Distance; if the tonearm is swung all the way toward the platter’s spindle center, the Overhang Length would be the shortest distance between the spindle and the stylus tip. Also shown is the Offset Angle, which is between two lines: one line goes from the tonearm pivot point to the stylus tip, and the other line proceeds down the center of the cartridge body, through the cantilever and to the stylus tip.

This chart describes the complete range of possible Effective Lengths.  The shortest effective length shown has a prescribed mounting distance of just under 5 inches; it would be impossible to mount this arm outside the rim of a 10 inch record.  The longest Effective Length is one meter; an arm this long would be impractical, overly heavy, and would also vibrate with an unacceptably high amplitude.  Still, it’s interesting to see what happens to the Offset Angle and the Overhang Length as the Effective Length increases.
